NY Times Reporter Lectures on the Role of Media in Global Health
Donald McNeil, Jr., a science and health reporter for the New York Times, began his lecture at WCMC with a series of fascinating stories and nuanced insights into the world of global health and working abroad. He depicted his travels from Mogadishu, Somalia to Mumbai, India, detailing stories on the importance of understanding Sangomas and cultural beliefs in South Africa, polio eradication campaigns, and low-level corruption in Nigeria. He highlighted the influential role the media played in bringing down the cost of HIV/AIDS antiretroviral drugs—which are now less than $100. McNeil closed with a discussion on the struggle to make core public health issues like sanitation and program evaluation headline news.
