Global health is a multidisciplinary field of service, research, and training that seeks to improve the health of individuals and help populations achieve excellence in health worldwide, especially for those in resource-poor settings. We have developed a Global Health track for clinical fellows in Endocrinology, General Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine, etc. The Global Health fellowship track aims to address the global needs of resource-poor communities including primary care, infectious diseases, chronic illness, maternal and child health, and health service delivery. Fellows satisfy ACGME requirements in their respective disciplines, receive training in global health and conduct a mentored global health research project abroad.
The Global Health fellowship track includes extensive field-based research in Weill Cornell programs based in Brazil, Haiti, India, Lebanon, and Tanzania, along with training in research methods (MSc in Clinical Epidemiology) or other tailored research training, and teaching. Objectives include providing trainees with the skills to design and conduct patient-oriented research and to prepare trainees for NIH K-award submission. There are also opportunities for fellows in Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine on a case-by-case basis.
Dr. Katey Walsh serves as Director of the Global Health fellowship track. Dr. Walsh has over a decade of global health research experience working with Weill Cornell’s collaborator, GHESKIO, in Haiti.
