Fall 2012 Resident Exchange Program
(Left to right: Drs. Abdallah Mlwati, Rehema Shedafa, and Awilly Chofle)
Drs. Abdallah Mlwati, Rehema Shedafa, and Awilly Chofle, from Mwanza, Tanzania, are currently completing a 6-week rotation in the Department of Medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital through Weill Cornell Medical College’s resident exchange program with Weill Bugando University College of Health Sciences. The international physicians join morning report, participate in rounds, and attend medical grand round lectures. In addition, the team has a series of different seminars to attend and presentations to prepare.
The mission of the Weill Cornell Medical College resident exchange program with Weill Bugando University College of Health Sciences in Mwanza, Tanzania, is to train the next generation of Tanzanian physicians while simultaneously expanding the awareness and skills of Weill Cornell faculty, residents, and students. Tanzanian medicine residents travel to New York City and rotate in New York Presbyterian Hospital, learning first-hand about health conditions prevalent in the US. Additionally, because the visiting residents have far more expertise in the treatment of illnesses rarely seen at NYP, the Tanzanian residents schedule presentations with Cornell residents to share their knowledge about conditions such as malaria, schistosomiasis, tetanus, and a variety of other parasitic diseases. The resident exchange program is truly a mutually beneficial program for both institutions.
All three Tanzanian physicians are currently completing their residency in Internal Medicine from Weill Bugando University College of Health Sciences in Mwanza, Tanzania. Rehema Shedafa and Awilly Chofle are interested in pursuing a future in Cardiology, and Abdallah Mlwati hopes to specialize in Infectious Diseases or Gastroenterology.
