GHESKIO Director Interviewed by Canadian Broadcasting about Elevated Relief Efforts in Haiti

Dr. Jean Pape, Weill Cornell Professor of Medicine and the Director of GHESKIO, Weill Cornell’s long-term medical center partner in Haiti, was recently interviewed by the Canadian broadcast station CBC to discuss how they are coordinating relief efforts both at GHESKIO and at the epicenter of the earthquake in Les Cayes in the south of the country.

Over the weekend, GHESKIO and their site coordinator at the Hospital Immaculée Conception (HIC) of Les Cayes began distributing supplies directly to survivors and their families in the affected area. Cash, safe water equipment, tents and medical kits have been given to those who lost housing and to trauma and post-operative patients who do not have safe housing to return to for recovery.

Ten community health workers are also being trained to screen community members for symptoms of cholera, TB, COVID-19 and other infectious diseases to prevent outbreaks. Dr. Pape remains optimistic that with proper financial and resource support, recovery for both the communities and facilities affected is possible.

“There's a long road to rehabilitation of patients. So you can see that it's going to take some time. But at least we have the know-how. If we have the support, we can do it,” he said during the interview.
