Moving from Independent Projects to Collaborative Programs

This Fall, faculty of the Weill Cornell Center for Global Health gathered in Port-au-Prince, Haiti at GHESKIO for a research retreat. It was the first visit to the Haiti site for many of our faculty who work in Brazil, India, Tanzania, and Uganda. The GHESKIO senior leadership presented on their major initiatives including the national scale-up of major HIV and TB treatment programs, a successful cholera vaccination program, and the development of an innovative cardiovascular disease service and research program. One major goal of the retreat was to highlight the breadth and magnitude of GHESKIO’s programs which serve as a model of research, service, and training for the Center’s other country programs.

Another goal of the retreat was to build collaborations between country programs to facilitate the development of the Center’s cross-country research programs in Infectious Diseases, Maternal Health, and Chronic Diseases. Cornell and GHESKIO faculty presented on funded research projects and competed for small grants to implement collaborative pilot project between at least two country programs. Two small grants were awarded: Poverty-related Environmental Lead Exposure and Cardiovascular Disease in Haiti, Tanzania and India and Effects of Comorbid Conditions on the Immune Response to Tuberculosis in Pregnancy in India, Tanzania, and Haiti.
