Earthquake and Storm Tracking in Haiti

On August 14, Haiti suffered a 7.2 magnitude earthquake and is now in the path of tropical depression Grace. The Southern department in Haiti was most severely affected. In two major cities, Les Cayes and Jeremie, and surrounding areas, hundreds were killed, and thousands more injured. The hospitals in these areas are overwhelmed with treating the injured.

Weill Cornell is working with our partner organization in Haiti, GHESKIO, to respond to both disasters. The GHESKIO facilities in Port-au-Prince have fortunately not been affected by the earthquake. All GHESKIO relief efforts are being coordinated with the Haitian government. GHESKIO has long standing ties to the hospital in Les Cayes, one of the most severely affected cities and is working to rapidly increase their surgical capacity. We also anticipate a surge in COVID-19 and other communicable diseases. GHESKIO is establishing surveillance and treatment facilities for these infectious diseases.
