Dr. Robert Peck Awarded NIH Grant to Improve Post-Hospital Care in Tanzania

Dr. Robert Peck received an NIH research grant (R01) to address the gap between hospital and HIV clinic.

Dr. Peck is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine, and member of the Center for Global Health. His research focuses on the epidemiology of HIV-related cardiovascular disease in Africa, in addition to interventions for prevention and treatment of hypertension.

Hospital admission rates remain high in HIV-infected adults in Africa but post-hospital mortality is high. About one-quarter of admitted, HIV-infected adults will die within the first year after hospital discharge. Dr. Peck's new research includes a clinical trial of an evidence-based social worker intervention that has been adapted to the African context and piloted with positive results. This clinical trial will determine if this intervention can increase survival. If successful, Dr. Peck will collaborate with the Tanzanian Ministry of Health to implement this program throughout Tanzania.
