Distribution of Survival Supplies Continues in South, Capital of Haiti

GHESKIO, Weill Cornell’s medical center partner in Haiti, and the Haitian Ministry of Health continue to coordinate clinical interventions and send survival supplies to Les Cayes and Jeremie, the two largest cities in the south of Haiti most affected by the recent 7.2 magnitude earthquake and tropical depression that hit the country on August 14. The storms across the southern region have hindered, but not prevented, rescue efforts at this time.

GHESKIO leadership and our clinical coordinator based in the region’s largest public hospital in Les Cayes are evaluating needs daily and citing a number of supplies necessary to support those displaced by housing damage, prevent water-borne disease and COVID-19 infections, and provide healthcare workers with the resources needed to provide care to the nearly 10,000 people injured to date.

Antibiotics and oral and IV fluids are paramount, as are supplies for vaccination campaigns and healthcare worker trainings that will prevent recurrences of cholera, typhoid fever, TB and other infectious conditions. Survival support supplies include locally sourced food, chlorine solution for potable water and tents for displaced families. We are also working to provide resources to girls and women to prevent gender-based violence.

Donations to support these initiatives are especially appreciated during this devastating time. The entirety of these donations will support the purchase of much-needed supplies for both our patient populations and healthcare works at earthquake and flooding sites.

To send a 100% tax-deductible donation, please fill out the online form here and specify “Global Health” under “About Your Gift.”
