Celebrating Dr. Godfrey Kisigo: Advancing Sleep Health and Cardiovascular Research in Tanzania

Dr. Kisigo presenting his research       Dr. Kisigo at LSTHM
The Center for Global Health (CGH) at Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM) proudly celebrates the successful PhD defense of Dr. Godfrey Kisigo! Dr. Kisigo, a medical doctor and Research Fellow at the Mwanza Intervention Trials Unit (MITU), completed his doctoral training through the prestigious London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).
His groundbreaking doctoral research was fully supported by the Fogarty International Center of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), marking a significant milestone for regional research capacity and the global understanding of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in sub-Saharan Africa.
The Intersection of Sleep, HIV, and Healthy Aging
Dr. Kisigo successfully defended his PhD thesis, titled “Sleep Health Epidemiology in People with HIV and Comparable HIV-Uninfected Adults in Tanzania: A Mixed-Method Study.”
Conducting his research on the ground in Mwanza, Tanzania, Dr. Kisigo examined sleep health among adults with and without HIV using an innovative mixed-methods framework. His project combined robust epidemiological data with objective monitoring and qualitative approaches to evaluate multiple dimensions of sleep, including:
  • Total sleep duration and subjective quality
  • Night-to-night variability and sleep regularity
  • Objective prevalence of sleep apnea using overnight oximetry
  • Social, behavioral, and environmental stressors that influence sleep in everyday life
Historically, global health initiatives in sub-Saharan Africa have focused primarily on infectious disease management. However, as the regional burden shifts toward chronic conditions, understanding lifestyle and physiological factors becomes critical. By providing some of the first comprehensive data on sleep health in this setting, Dr. Kisigo's research contributes to a rapidly growing body of literature positioning sleep as a fundamental component of healthy aging and chronic disease prevention in Africa.
A Collaborative Global Effort
This ambitious, multi-disciplinary study was made possible through dedicated mentorship from several WCM faculty members :
  • Dr. Robert Peck served as a supervisor, guiding the research project's implementation and epidemiology framework on the ground in Mwanza.
  • Dr. Ana Krieger served as an advisor on sleep medicine, providing critical clinical expertise in sleep architecture and monitoring methodologies.
  • Dr. Myung Hee Lee guided Godfrey in the statistical analysis, ensuring rigorous analytical evaluation of the objective and epidemiological datasets.

Bridging the Gap: Sleep and Cardiovascular Risk
Dr. Kisigo has applied advanced analytical methodologies to translate these findings into cardiovascular insights. Utilizing wearable-device metrics and 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM), his work explicitly investigates how micro-patterns in sleep characteristics influence macro-level blood pressure dynamics.
This ongoing focus has already led to two forthcoming manuscripts. These studies closely examine the relationships between sleep efficiency, ambulatory blood pressure dynamics, and masked nocturnal hypertension (high blood pressure that occurs exclusively at night and often goes undetected during standard clinic visits) among East African adults.
Ultimately, these initiatives form the foundation of an expanding research program dedicated to exploring sleep as a key, modifiable determinant of cardiovascular risk and healthy aging.
Looking Ahead
Having transitioned from earning his medical degree at the Weill Bugando School of Medicine to advanced epidemiological training at Duke University and LSHTM, Dr. Kisigo embodies the next generation of independent investigators based in Tanzania. The Center for Global Health is incredibly honored to have supported his journey through the Fogarty International Center fellowship, and we look forward to his continued leadership in chronic disease epidemiology.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Kisigo on this spectacular achievement!
