Women in Global Health Leadership Workshop

The Weill Cornell Women in Global Health Research Initiative hosted a Leadership Development Workshop on March 10-11, 2016 that brought together female junior faculty and trainees from Cornell and our international partner sites. The workshop was tailored to female junior faculty and trainees who spend extended time in resource-poor settings for their field research and are therefore unable to access other leadership development opportunities.

The workshop was a collaboration between the Initiative and Cornell University's Johnson Graduate School of Management that focused on building leadership skills such as leading diverse teams, strategic negotiation, and effective presenting. The small-group format of the workshop allowed for discussion and brainstorming about how to support and advance women to leadership positions in the field of global health.

The women in attendance came from multiple divisions and departments at Weill Cornell Medical College, our international partner sites in Tanzania, Haiti, and India, as well as the College of Human Ecology and the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University in Ithaca. Drawing from the diversity of experiences and backgrounds represented, attendees shared their experiences of adapting leadership styles in various settings and the strategies they would use in the future.

Dr. Monika Safford, Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine at WCMC and NYPH, also joined the workshop as the keynote speaker and shared her experience as a woman leader in health disparities research and the lessons she learned throughout her career.
