Stories From The Field: GHESKIO

The cholera outbreak in Haiti – one of the worst in recent history – has presented new challenges to victims of the 2010 earthquake. GHESKIO constructed a permanent Cholera Treatment Center on its downtown campus to combat the epidemic. Between October 2010 and October 2011, 7,108 patients were admitted to GHESKIO Cholera Treatment Centers; the mortality rate was less than 0.5%. GHESKIO also continues to lead recovery and rebuilding efforts through the management of a tent city for victims rendered homeless in the earthquake. News source Voice of America recently covered GHESKIO’s rebuilding efforts.
