The Weill Cornell Global Health Research Fellowship is a 3 year fellowship designed to train generalist clinician-scientists for academic careers in global health research. This innovative Fellowship is tailored for post-residency graduates in internal medicine and provides a unique opportunity for essential time dedicated to field work and research training. Fellows receive intensive mentorship from faculty in New York and international Weill Cornell faculty throughout their training. 

 Fellowship Training Components

1. Field-Based Research and Mentorship
Trainees conduct research in Haiti, Tanzania, India, or Brazil for a minimum of 20 months over the three-year program. This amount of field research time is unique essential to this program.

2. Masters in Science Clinical Epidemiology and Health Services Research
The program consists of didactic courses (Biostatistics I and II, Clinical Research Methods, Epidemiology, Research Ethics, etc) and a mentored thesis project (published paper). 

3. Hospital Medicine Clinical and Teaching Service
Trainees are mentored by faculty in the Division of Hospital Medicine. Each trainee is paired with a primary hospital medicine mentor, who provides mentorship on clinical care, teaching, and quality improvement methods. 

Fellowship Faculty

Drs. Daniel Fitzgerald and Margaret McNairy co-direct the program with multidisciplinary faculty, including Dr. Mary Charlson and Dr. Arthur Evans. Dr. Fitzgerald has nearly two decades of global health research experience, working with GHESKIO in Haiti, where he has played a critical role in furthering advances for the treatment of HIV-AIDS and Tuberculosis. Dr. McNairy’s research focuses on implementation science of HIV models of care and health system strengthening in resource-limited settings.

Who is Eligible to Apply?

    • Graduates of internal medicine residency training programs
    • Applicants with Masters and/or PhD degrees
    • Applicants with prior fellowships
    • Those who express a commitment to become clinician-scientists focused on global health research
    • Prior global health experience encouraged
